Before finding answer to the question what exactly is Virtual transmission line (VTL), lets have a quick overview on a case study of Australia's New South Wales (NSW) blackouts which could possibly be started with brownout. Early Jan 2018 Australia faces 1000MW of power loss affecting 31000 properties across NSW, total number of outages was 42 acroos the state the reason for this huge loss was, four outages were caused by the overloads on the network
so if load demand keeps on increasing and the infrastructure supplying the load is not improved or rerated than this situation could occur. sometimes it is difficult to upgrade the infrastructure due to cost constraints, so in that case customers are told to limit the usage of electricity during peak hours, thus the terms peak hours and off peak hours comes to pictures. So if increasing the infrastructure is not cost effective then how do we deal with it, the answer is VTL.
Concept called Virtual Transmission Lines centers on using distributed energy resources (DER) like solar, battery storage, wind and other possible renewable energy sources, so all these DER steps in when power is needed and through battery storage excess power generated by the grid and DER can be stored, this also increases the generation capacity of the grid. in case of grid failure DER can quickly come to the role meanwhile grid outage can be sorted.
DER can also be referred to as Virtual Power Plant (VPP), the VTL concept is simple as placing energy storage on a transmission line and operating it to inject or absorb real power, thus avoiding the need of upgrading the transmission line. VTL can really help in improving the congestion.
VTL projects are already running in India, Germany, Austrlia, France, US.
