as per the latest study published in the energy storage made in the university of California that fast charging technology used in the commercial electric vehicle can shorten the life of electric vehicle and most probably could damage it. commercial fast charging methods puts batteries in high temperature and high energy density which causes damage to the batteries such as leak, crack, or loss of storage capacity. researchers have developed a method to for charging at lower temperature with less damage to the battery.

in the experiment discharged Panasonic 18650B Li-ion cell was charged, that is found in Tesla cars. charging was done using same industry standards. they also charged a set of same battery using their own fast charging algorithm that keeps track of batteries internal resistance as internal resistance varies with temperature, SOC, age etc, higher internal resistance can cause the problem.

their method of charging keeps track of batteries internal resistance, when resistance boost up charging rests, to prevent the losses and storage.

For the first 13 charging cycle the battery capacity remains same for both methods however after 40 cycles capacity with industry standards charging method went to 60% whereas with new internal resistance tracking system charging method the capacity remains upto 80%

Industrial fast charging affects the life span of the battery due to increase in the internal resistance, which results in heat generation and deterioration further. after 60 cycles the casing of the cells were cracked and exposed to air which results in the risk of fire. Internal resistance charging method results in lower temperature rise and no damage.

The researchers are now moving to patent this method of charging with name of adaptive internal resistance fast charging algorithm.
